My name is Yvonne Iwanczuk. I have been fortunate enough to take up the post of Services Manager for the Melton Mowbray Mencap & Gateway. I joined the organisation on the 1st March this year. It has been very exciting meeting everyone. I have worked with people with learning disabilities since I was seventeen. I started my career as a volunteer and worked my way through nurse training and a hospital career before starting my own family. I have three children, two sons and a daughter. When they were young I worked in education with children with special educational needs. I followed one girl through her school years from 4 to 11 years old. In 1991 I moved to the Glenfield Project, a respite care home for children with severe learning and physical disabilities. I eventually became their project manager in 2004. This work has been a passion for me and I bring all my enthusiasm and motivation along with me. I am a hands on type of person, I love anything creative, D.I.Y, and the outdoors, camping and caravanning. I walk in the countryside whenever possible with my partner. We like to garden and dance. Change can often be quite worrying to all concerned. It is only natural to be apprehensive. I would like to reassure everyone that I will give my full commitment to this post and work very closely with everyone to continue to provide an excellent service. The people who enjoy the groups and activities will be the central focus of everything I do and everyone will be valued and play an active role in the development of our future. Our aim will be to seek out as many opportunities, experiences and activities as we possibly can and to create loads of fun times and happy memories.
Since writing the above article I have learnt so much about Melton Mencap and the work we do to provide groups for people with learning disabilities. We value and respect all people as individuals. We ensure that they have a voice, that they are listened to and that their contributions and opinion are appreciated and responded to. We have policies and procedures in place that cover all areas of safety, equal opportunities and protection for children and adults. We work closely with other agencies and support multi disciplinary work to ensure a consistent service and understanding is maintained for all our members. The staff team is a group of highly skilled and committed people who build strong bonds with the groups that ensure individual and group needs and best interests are met. During our summer scheme we are OFSTED registered and ensure we meet all inspection requirements. Why not visit our summer scheme page and see the fun. It cannot fail to make you smile.
